A Visit to the Virtual Versailles
A virtual visit to the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, via Google's new Art Project.
Did you ever fantasize that the watchman would forget about you and that somehow you’d get to stay on in the museum all alone after closing time? That’s what it feels like virtually prowling through the emptied museum galleries included in Google’s new ‘Art Project,’ which applies the gliding and peeking 360 technology of Google-Earth to some of the world’s finest institutions—from the Met to London’s National Gallery to Madrid’s Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. I love slinking down the halls in Versailles via this link, wandering the Hall of Mirrors and always spinning my cursor around to check out the grand chandeliers and painted ceilings. Bravo, Google!
I saw Google’s new thing and I need to take the time to check out all the virtual museums. Versailles seems like a dream. I have read so much about it too. Can you believe that I travel to France every year as my own private getaway, but I have yet to make it to Versailles? When I take my annual trip later this year I will spend an entire day there. Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for this wonderful website and your wonderful book that cheers me up every time I look at it.
