It’s been too long! I just wanted to drop a line here on an article about Keats and Shelley meeting at Lake Geneva in the New York Times (See it here), as described in Encyclopedia of the Exquisite‘s entry on Tempests. The two loved sailing, and even went in on a small boat together. Unfortunately, Shelley never learned how to swim. His last notebooks are filled with sketches of schooners and small sailing ships.
The beautiful wooden boats are going in here in Maine, in the fog, passing by our front window on the way down to the launch. Maybe I’ll sit down and read a little Shelley.
I saw a nice photo of you in your sailor suit looking as apprehensive as Shelley must have. But I know you can swim!
I can swim. But I wouldn’t yet! Too cold…
