How Sweet It Is

The grand beekeeping tradition.

All summer long I’d been meaning to write about how much I love beekeeping. We got a hive in July and I could sit and watch those little ladies dart in and out with their bags of pollen all afternoon long. We started too late in the season to harvest any honey this year—they needed to make enough for themselves to survive a Maine winter. But I’m already dreaming of next year’s taste of the divine. I mean, I loved honey when I wrote about it in Encyclopedia of the Exquisite, under the heading Nectar & Ambrosia. I can only say that my appreciation has grown a hundred fold since then. Here, a photo of my sweet honeybees.

Our lovely bees bringing home the pollen—goldenrod here, I think.
